I don’t have a lot of experience with refashioning (also called upcycling, meaning to modify an existing garment to give it a new look). I have attempted it a couple of times, but my very first is still probably my favorite.
I was going to an underground music party and wanted something that was edgy yet comfy enough for dancing, and that would keep me warm but look sexy at the same time. So I went to Goodwill to look for something to play with. I found a $6 pair of cargo pants that fit me well in the waist and butt and had these cool front, back, and leg pockets with leather details. I checked the label: Cedella Marley. When I googled it later I discovered that the last name is not a coincidence
! I took that as an encouraging sign.
The actual refashion was really simple. First, I made a mini skirt by unpicking the crotch seam, cutting off the legs, overlapping the crotch seam and hand-sewing it as flat and as neat as possible on front and back.
The back was a little pointy because the crotch seam was longer, but I figured I don’t mind some extra length to cover my butt. Which is really silly because the entire skirt was still rather short and 2in weren't going to make a difference but that was my excuse and that was that.
Finally, I turned over the tops of the cutoff pant legs, sewed a casing for each, inserted some elastic and voila! -- matching leg warmers!
All in all I was quite happy with how it all turned out. Alas, I have added a few inches to my waist since 2009 and the skirt no longer fits. Not even close :(. But I just can’t bring myself to give away my 1st refashion. So I tell myself that one day I will lose enough weight to honor Cedella Marley once more.
